Singapore and India Sign MOU to Strengthen Legal and Dispute Resolution Cooperation

1. Singapore’s Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and Second Minister for Law Mr Edwin Tong SC and India’s Minister for Law and Justice Mr Arjun Ram Meghwal have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today, to deepen cooperation on legal and dispute resolution services between the two countries.
2. Under the MOU, the Singapore Ministry of Law and the India Ministry of Law and Justice will work together to promote the exchange of people, expertise and information, as well as facilitate, hold and organise events and courses on international commercial dispute resolution, promotion of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, and other areas of mutual interests.
3. A Joint Consultative Committee, co-chaired at the Ministerial or Secretary level, will also be set up, and will meet regularly to make and implement specific proposals under the MOU.
4. Minister Tong said, “Singapore enjoys excellent, broad-based and multifaceted relations with India. Given our strong economic and commercial ties, it is imperative for us to continually deepen our cooperation in the legal and dispute resolution fields. This will enable us to better support our businesses and those doing business with Singapore and India. We look forward to exchanging our experiences and strengthening our relationships with the India Ministry of Law and Justice, as well as with the various legal and dispute resolution industry players in India.”
5. Minister Meghwal said, “The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding signifies our collective commitment to deepening collaboration in the field of law and dispute resolution, with a focus on sharing best practices, exchanging expertise, and facilitating capacity building initiatives for the stakeholders. Through this partnership, we are aiming to harness synergies between our legal regimes, leverage our respective strengths and explore innovative approaches to address the evolving needs of our citizens and businesses.”
