Singapore and Japan to Strengthen Legal Cooperation

  1. Singapore and Japan will further strengthen legal cooperation with the signing of a new Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) today. The MOC was signed by Singapore’s Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law Edwin Tong SC and Japan’s Minister of Justice Kamikawa Yoko, at the Ministry of Justice in Tokyo, Japan. The signing took place during Minister Tong’s call on Minister Kamikawa, which was part of Minister Tong’s ongoing official trip to Japan.

  1. Under the MOC, Singapore and Japan will cooperate on matters of mutual interest including international commercial dispute resolution and people-to-people exchanges in the legal sector, through channels such as:

    a) Exchanging legal publications;

    b) Exchanging visits and study trips; and

    c) Organising and holding meetings, conferences and dialogues.

  1. “Singapore and Japan enjoy a long-standing relationship across 55 years of diplomatic relations. The signing of the MOC today is testament to our close ties. It builds on the strong foundation of exchanges between our governments, dispute resolution institutions, and legal fraternity. We look forward to further deepening our legal cooperation, so that we can better support businesses and open up more opportunities for the legal and dispute resolution sectors in both countries,” Minister Tong said.
